Welcome to The Lord of the Flies Survival Guide Wiki
You have been asked to create a survival guide for the young British boys that are stranded on the deserted island at the beginning of the book Lord of the Flies. Wilderness survival takes preparation and special knowledge about your environment. For our purposes, we will assume that the boys have crashed on a Pacific Island. Pacific Islands are generally grouped into three divisions: Melanesia, Micronesia, Polynesia. Please choose an island from one of these divisions. It is necessary that you name what island you choose as it will be the island your survival guide is based on. For example, a survival guide for Fiji might look different than a survival guide for New Guinea because those islands may have different terrain, rainfall, climate etc.
You can go to this Wikipedia page to help you choose and island.

Overview: After reading William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, students will use their knowledge of the events, setting, and characters of the story to create their own survival guide. These survival guides will include survival skills, tips, and strategies that would be useful and focused around the specific setting and events of the novel.

Standards

E1-6.8 Design and carry out research projects by selecting a topic,

constructing inquiry questions, accessing resources, evaluating credibility,

and organizing information.

E1-6.2 Use direct quotations, paraphrasing, or summaries to incorporate

into written, oral, auditory, or visual works the information gathered from

a variety of research sources.

E1-6.3 Use a standardized system of documentation (including a list of

sources with full publication information and the use of in-text citations) to

properly credit the work of others.

E1-6.6 Select appropriate graphics, in print or electronic form, to support written works, oral presentations, and visual presentations.

Procedures:

We will be Reading Lord of the Flies, brainstorm what skills you think would have been helpful or life saving for the boys in the novel. You will take this list and divide it into subcategories of skills by grouping them together i.e. weapons and traps will be under “hunting”. Then there will be a wilderness survival quiz to take using the iPads. Once you have the results you will see how little you probably know about these skills and that you need to know more. This leads, naturally, into RESEARCH!! Yay! Using the iPads we will be navigating through the selection of credible sites on our class wiki page to attain said information. We will discuss the merits of each site and how we can gauge its credibility as we move forward. Once the information is gathered it will be time to put together your lovely survival guides. You may create a hard copy or create a digital guide with Smore or Prezi. Finally you will present your guide to the class.
